Airline or airport strikes and flight incidents disrupt flights often. Check the table below to find how often strikes and incidents cause disruptions in 2020. We are constantly updating it with any upcoming strikes or major disruptions so you can stay up to date!

Am I eligible for compensation if my flight was cancelled or delayed due to a strike?

In most cases, you are not eligible for flight compensation if your flight was cancelled or delayed because of a strike. This is because the Regulation (EC) 261/2004 considers airline and airport strikes to be an extraordinary circumstance that is out of the airline’s control.

But even if your flight was cancelled because of an extraordinary circumstance, such as a strike, the regulation grants you rights the airline must ensure. If you were informed about a flight cancellation less than 14 days before your flight, the airline must rebook you on another flight or offer you a full refund. The airline should get in touch with you about your options, but you can also reach out to them and ask for help.

When your flight is disrupted, you are also entitled to the care defined in (EC) 261/2004.

What is considered as extraordinary circumstances when it comes to flight disruption?

Extraordinary circumstances, as defined by (EC) 261/2004, are a series of events (or a single occurrence) completely out of airline’s control.

These events are considered to be extraordinary circumstances when it comes to flight disruptions:

  • unfavorable weather conditions (thick fog, heavy snow, etc.)
  • wildlife strikes (e.g. bird hits)
  • political instability
  • operational issues at the airport
  • air traffic disputes
  • serious security concerns
  • strikes

There are some exceptions, though, and your disrupted flight may qualify for compensation. Even if it was disrupted due to a strike. Fill out our claim form to find out!
