Security staff at Gatwick International Airport has announced an additional strike in August 2019. They also restated their intention to launch a strike that was announced earlier.
The first airport staff strike will take 48 hours and start on August 10. The new, second Gatwick airport strike will take place from Tuesday, August 20, to Saturday, August 24. Around 130 security employees, all members of Union Unite, will take part in the walkout. Airport authorities claim that flights shouldn’t be affected.
As always, air passengers affected by delays or cancellations due to this disturbance have all the usual rights granted to them under Regulation (EC) 261/2004. For delays lasting more than two hours, the airline has to provide you with free meals and drinks. You should also be allowed to make two free calls, use email or send a free fax. If you have to wait for the flight for one or more nights, the carrier has to provide you with free accommodation at a hotel, including transport to/from the airport. In case they’re unable/unwilling to do this, save the receipts: all “rational” expenses (no VIP penthouses, caviar or limos) should be refunded afterwards.
However, flight disruptions caused by airport operation issues are not considered claimable under EU law. The airline is not responsible for whatever happens at the airport and that’s why Regulation (EU) 261/2004 does not award compensation for such situations.
