Prepare for possible disruptions as London Luton Airport security staff plans to strike for 12 days, beginning with May 23rd.
The strike is supposed to last until June 3rd. The union Unite claims that their members are striking over shift pattern changes which will force around 120 guards will end up working 15 extra days a year, with only nine weekends off a year. The union also claims that the airport hasn’t hired enough new guards to cope with the increasing number of passengers. Luton Aiport claims that they will handle the strike easily.
As always, air passengers suffering flights cancelled or delayed due to strike should know that they have rights granted to them under Regulation (EC) 261/2004. The airline has to provide you with free meals and drinks. You should also be allowed to make two free calls, use email or send a free fax. If you have to wait for the flight for one or more nights, the carrier has to provide you with free accommodation at a hotel, including transport to/from the airport. In case they’re unable/unwilling to do this, save the receipts: all “rational” expenses (no VIP penthouses, caviar or limos) should be refunded afterwards. Read more
Unfortunately, strikes by airport staff are one of the exceptional circumstances as defined by (EC) 261/2004 – which means you can’t claim cancelled flight compensation! Other rules still apply, so the airlines should still take care of you.
