What Is the APPR?

The APPR ensures that passengers on flights to, from, and within Canada are protected. It applies to all airlines operating in Canadian airspace.

The Canadian Transportation Agency ensures that you get fair treatment in case of a delayed flight, a cancelled flight, or an overbooked flight.

History and the Regulation

The APPR was introduced in 2019. Its main goal is to strengthen air passenger rights in Canada and ensure that people get fair treatment for issues where the airline is at fault.

Before 2019, there were fewer protections for air travelers, and it was more difficult for people to claim refunds or compensation from delayed and cancelled flights. Now, the APPR provides clear guidelines for compensation and assistance.

When Are You Eligible for Compensation?

You may be eligible for compensation if:

- Your flight was delayed.
- Your flight was cancelled.
- Your baggage was lost, damaged, or delayed.
- You were denied boarding due to overbooking.

These situations must fall within the airline’s control and not be caused by extraordinary circumstances.
For example, airline staffing issues or maintenance problems warrant compensation. Extreme weather or other uncontrollable events, however, do not.

APPR Compensation: Key Points

  • Up to CAD 2,400 in monetary compensation for flight disruptions.

  • Covers flight delays and cancellations, denied boarding, and baggage issues.

  • Applies to flights to, from, and within Canada, including connecting flights.

  • In case of a flight disruption, airlines must offer alternate travel arrangements or refunds.

  • Keep your original ticket, boarding pass, and any communications with the airline.

Exceptions: When You’re Not Entitled to Compensation

There are some situations where the airlines don’t have to provide compensation, even in cases of flight delay, cancellation, or denied boarding. Some of them include:

  • Weather conditions (storm, fog, etc.)
  • Security threats.
  • Air traffic control issues.
  • Strikes not within the airline’s control.
  • Mechanical issues related to safety.

In these cases, airlines must still provide assistance, such as alternate travel arrangements and refreshments, but monetary compensation may not apply.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How much compensation can I get under APPR?

Compensation amounts range from CAD 125 to CAD 1,000 for flight delays and cancellations, depending on the airline’s size and length of delay. Denied boarding compensation ranges from CAD 900 to CAD 2,400. However, keep in mind that the airlines don’t have to provide compensation if the disruption was caused by extraordinary circumstances.

  • What flights are covered by APPR?

Flights to, from, and within Canada, including connecting flights, are covered by Air Passenger Protection Regulations (APPR). Both large and small airlines operating in Canadian airspace must comply with the APPR. Before you submit your claim, make sure to have your original ticket, boarding pass, and communications with the airline ready.

  • Does APPR apply to international travelers?

Yes, if your flight delay involves Canada, the APPR applies regardless of your nationality. The airline must provide alternate travel arrangements in long flight delays and cancellations, as well as pay monetary compensation if no alternate flights are found.

Make sure to keep all travel documents with you, such as your original ticket, boarding pass, and communications with the airline if you want to improve your chances of monetary compensation.

  • How long does it take to get APPR compensation?

Airlines must respond to claims within 30 days. If you escalate the claim to the CTA or use a service like Skycop, the process may take longer due to the airline’s unwillingness to comply.

  • What if the airline rejects my APPR claim?

If your claim is rejected, you can escalate the issue to the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) or seek assistance from services like Skycop to get your compensation.
