If no passengers volunteer to give up their seat in exchange for compensation, some travellers may be denied boarding against their will. As passengers have no way of knowing whether their ticket was purchased after the flight was fully booked, it can appear that boarding is refused at random. In such cases, passengers are protected.

How Do Flights Get Overbooked?
Flights become overbooked when airlines sell more tickets than there are seats available on the aircraft. This is a common practice across the airline industry. Although it may seem likely to cause problems for passengers, most travellers are usually unaffected.
Airlines overbook flights to maximise aircraft capacity and generate as much revenue as possible by ensuring all seats are filled.
Airlines rely on the fact that some passengers will cancel or change their plans at the last minute, which normally results in empty seats. These seats are then taken by passengers who purchased the additional tickets.
However, from time to time, not enough seats become available. When this happens, passengers may be asked to volunteer to give up their seat. If there are not enough volunteers, some passengers may be involuntarily denied boarding.
There is no way to know in advance whether your flight is overbooked. If too few passengers cancel and you are affected, you may lose your seat and become eligible for compensation.
Legal Protections Against Airline Overbooking
According to Rule 32, compensation for passengers who are denied boarding becomes mandatory when there are more passengers than available seats on the aircraft.
In the United Kingdom, passengers who are denied boarding due to overbooking are protected under UK261 air passenger rights. Aaffected passengers may be entitled to compensation, care and assistance, re-routing on an alternative flight, or a refund, depending on the circumstances.
In the United Kingdom, the legal protection that applies following Brexit is the UK Denied Boarding Regulation, also known as UK261/2004.
Under UK261, passengers who are denied boarding may be entitled to compensation of £220 to £520, depending on the flight distance and the circumstances of the disruption.
For overbooked flights in the UK, passengers are typically offered two options: re-routing on an alternative flight or a refund of their ticket. The primary aim of these regulations is to ensure fair and appropriate financial compensation for affected passengers.
Check whether you are entitled to up to £520 in compensation under UK261. Find out if you can claim your money back by entering your departure airport and your final destination.
