The Biggest Flight Delays of the Week | 04.26

SAS – Scandinavian Airlines is having issues with their employees, which are going on a strike. See if your flight is affected!

Last Saturday, an Aeromexico Boeing 787-9 was flying Mexico City to Madrid when it encountered an electrical problem. It returned to Mexico City about 105 minutes after turning around. A replacement plane took the passengers to Madrid with a delay of 4,5 hours. Sadly, since this flight into the EU was not done by an EU-registered airline, it’s not eligible for flight compensation.

On Sunday, a Eurowings Airbus flight from Barcelona to Hamburg was disrupted by cabin pressure issues. It had to divert and land at Nice. After a replacement plane was organized the passengers reached Hamburg with a delay of 5,5 hours. Now that is a claimable flight!

On Wednesday, an Adria Airways plane meant for the flight from Ljubljana (Slovenia) to Munich rejected takeoff at high speed, safely slowed down and returned to the apron. The crew announced that they had experienced a bird strike. After repairs, the plane reached Munich with a delay of 3 hours and 10 minutes. Bird strikes are considered an exception in compensation rules and are unclaimable!

On the same day, a TUIfly flight from Frankfurt Main to Las Palmas (Gran Canaria) reported smoke and smell of fire from one of the on-board bathrooms. After declaring an emergency, the crew diverted the plane to Paris, where it landed safely. A replacement plane took the passengers to Gran Canaria with a delay of 7,5 hours, which feels like a compensation claim in the making.

Again on Wednesday, an Iberia Airbus A330-300 en route from Johannesburg to Madrid received an indication that the nose gear of the plane did not retract. The crew decided to return to Johannesburg. After sorting out the issue, the plane reached Madrid about 3 hours later. Depending on whether it was really 3 or more hours later, the passengers might be looking at the possibility of claiming compensation!

On Thursday, a KLM Boeing 747-400, performing a flight from Seoul to Amsterdam, had to stop the climb when one engine failed with a shower of sparks. After dumping the fuel, the plane landed back in Seoul 70 minutes later.
