5. Most Countries By Scheduled Transport

How many countries could you visit in 24 hours? Quite a few if you had your own plane or rented one. However, doing it entirely on scheduled transport – which includes all the customs and other checks – is another thing altogether. However, the record for most countries visited in 24 using only scheduled transport was set in Mont-Saint-Martin, France, on May 24th, 2017.

Umit Sabanci and Stephen James Finch reached the record by visiting 13 countries in a single day. Their trip took them through Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, The Netherlands, Luxembourg, Belgium and France. Overall, they spent less than 2 hours per country, which is basically how much time it takes to cross Luxembourg on foot (with toilet breaks).

4. Most Travelled Plushie

You’ll seen “Amelie”? Remember how she got a garden gnome sent on a globe-trotting pictorial adventure? Turns out, stuff like that happens in real life. Raymondo, a regular teddy bear owned by ISPY, started his trip in 2009. On September 3rd, 2010, he became the record holder for the most travelled mascot, having visited 6 continents (presumably it skipped the hostile and uninhabitable Australia) and 35 countries.

But he’s not the only plushie flying around there. Travelling Cy is likely going to break his record, as the toy has visited every continent and over 70 countries! Maybe I should take my SPQRball plushie and take in on a trip through former territories of the Roman Empire…

3. Biggest Collection of (Unused) Barf Bags

The airsickness bags found at every seat of the plane is one of those things we hope to never need to use. The other would be the inflatable jackets. However, while it would be illegal to collect said jackets, nobody really cares about your barf bag. And one guy collects those things!

Niek Vermeulen from the Netherlands has been collecting said bags since the 1970s when air travel was still mostly a fat cat affair. Over the years, he collected 6290 sickness bags from 1191 different airlines from almost 200 countries.

2. Biggest Airborne Speed Dating Event

Cherubs can sling their arrows of love while aloft on their own wings. The rest have to pay their airfare. But what if your flight was one entirely about love? Because something like that took place in 2013.

On June 19th of said year, the largest airborne speed-dating event took place. 60 singles from UK, Scotland and Ireland enrolled in this activity, which took place on the flight from London to Venice. Unfortunately, none of them had parachuted to escape any terminally bad dates.

1. Most Things Flown

Do you know how many things you have flown? Probably just a few regional airliners? Well, you have nothing on Edwin A. Shackelton, who has set the record for most aircraft flown as passenger.

By January 2007, this man, an RAF veteran, had flown 841 different types of aircraft. Those include balloons, airships, helicopters and microlights. Started from De Havilland DH 89 Dominie in 1943, now he’s here… I wonder if he had the chance to ride on an Avro Shackleton?

But while new aviation records happen every year, flight disruptions happen daily and are usually unremarked.
