5 Alternative Holiday Destinations to Try in 2019

The trouble with popular holiday destinations is their popularity. You want to go there, but so does everybody else. In addition, that means a lot of bodies in one place. So why not try out something else? Here are some alternatives to popular holiday destinations.

Venice -> Slovenia

Is Venice popular? Of course, it’s popular. It’s so popular that the city is suffering from it. All the issues that come with millions of visitors are forcing the locals out of Venice and even threatening its UNESCO status.

You know what’s not threatened? The winner of the 2017 most sustainable country award, Slovenia. It’s not that far from Italy, it can offer food that’s no less good and wine that’s probably even better. Want to get the whole romantic boat experience? Ljubljana, the capital, has just the river for that.

Bali -> Raja Ampat

Bali is probably the most be-touristed island in Indonesia. Long known as a spiritual place, it became extremely crowded with tourists, yoga chasers, influencers and similar people. The place is neither calm nor serene anymore.

Can’t say the same about Raja Ampat. The name means “Four Kings,” but it’s actually an archipelago of 1,500 small islands. It’s heaven – not a haven – for divers as Raja Ampat’s marine life diversity is considered to be the highest recorded on Earth. The native tribes are welcoming, too.

Blue Lagoon -> Myvatn Nature Baths

So, you came to Iceland, and you want to have a bath? Outside? You do realize the place is called ICE-land? Well, OK, don’t me stop you. But I will tell you to skip the famous Blue Lagoon. For one, it’s so jam-packed with tourists, it’s kinda off white now instead of blue.

Myvatn Nature Baths, on the other hand, sounds like a Croatian resort. However, they’re actually one of the less famous baths and springs on the island – and well worth a visit. Go there instead.

Croatia -> Bosnia and Herzegovina

You may feel the impulse to go to Dubrovnik. However, the influx of Game of Thrones fans has become a curse on the place, again threatening its UNESCO status. Moreover, while this pressure is going to be alleviated by the upsetting ending of Season 8, this place still needs a rest.

And look at that, the spry and healthy Bosnia and Herzegovina are just next door! Try to get there before it becomes an overcrowded tourist hotspot (visitor’s numbers increased over 12% last year). See the Lower Tara river canyon, the deepest canyon in Europe, the 13th-century fortress at Doboj and Ostrožac Castle, a 16th-century castle built by the Ottomans.

English or French coast -> Jersey

You may want to visit Normandy or Dover, or other places along the channel that people remember the names of. However, they’re kinda boring, and anybody can go there. Sure, they’re not threatened by tourists and only mildly threatened by Brexit.

But why not make the jump to Jersey (not Guernsey)? This plucky island of 100,000 is distinctly not part of the UK (it’s complicated) and has many of its own peculiarities, like emphasis apple produce, odd variations of potatoes and so on. Visit its historical sites (like the majestic Elizabeth castle), go rock-climbing at the coast or just lounge around – it’s a neat place!

Nevertheless, no matter where you choose to go, you might still encounter flight disruptions. Flight delays, cancelled flight and overbooking don’t really care about how popular your destination is. But Skycop cares about flight passengers – and we’ll help you claim flight compensation!
