6 Most Remote Locations You Can Reach By Direct Flight From Europe
The world is big, but Europe is small. Luckily for you, you can hop onto a plane and just fly to some faraway destinations (if you can afford the ticket). Malé
Male is the capital of the Republic of Maldives and one of the most densely populated places on Earth. The island is entirely covered by the city and was expanded by land-filling operations. In fact, the airport is located on its own island!
However, Maldives are about 1000 kilometers south of the Asian continent, so they’re not exactly the easiest way to get to – or you would think so if not for direct flights from London, Paris, Frankfurt and more. Istanbul is the closest, offering the flight that only takes 8 hours!
Ulaanbaatar
Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, was established in 1639… but then it changed its place 28 times before settling down where it is now in 1778. It’s the largest city in the country and nearly half of all Mongolians live there.
The city is connected by rail to the Russian and Chinese networks, but we’re here for the flights, damn it! If you want a direct flight from Europe, you’ll have to drag yourself to either Berlin or Frankfurt. And it will only take 9 hours in the air to get there!
Mahé
Mahé is not a common misspelling of Malé, but the biggest island of Seychelles, housing 86% of the population as well as the capital Victoria. It was named after Bertrand-François Mahé de La Bourdonnais, a French governor, by taking the hardest to misspell part of his name.
The island is serviced by Seychelles International Airport. Due to the popularity of Seychelles among the tourist kind, it can be reached (via a flight of about 10 hours) from London, Paris, Frankfurt, Zurich, and Istanbul.
Svalbard
Svalbard is an archipelago about half-way between continental Norway and the North Pole, so you just know that it’s a well-trafficked spot, right? Anyways, this is one of the most northern inhabited spots in the world. Curiously enough, it also contains the Soviet ghost town of Pyramiden.
Unlike the other destinations mentioned before, Svalbard can’t be reached via flights from London or Frankfurt. For that, you’ll have to go to Oslo. The flights only take three hours and happen daily – quite a feat when you consider that the place is only inhabited by around 2,700 people. On the other hand, the northernmost statues of Lenin and the northernmost brewery in the world must quite the draws!
Anchorage
Continuing with our coverage of “oh God, it’s so cold, why are you flying there,” it’s Anchorage! A “unified home rule municipality” (whatever that means), it’s the biggest city in Alaska. You can go there to see the natural views, visit the museums or visit the 3rd best pizza spot in the US.
Anchorage is actually very important for cargo transport since it’s equidistant to some of the world’s largest airport hubs. However, you probably don’t want to hitch a ride in a crate. That’s why you should make your way to Frankfurt, which serves the only direct flight to Anchorage in Europe. Take that, London Fail-throw.
Bermuda
On the other hand, you can always go to Bermuda! Known for its proximity to the damn triangle, it’s actually the largest of Britain’s overseas territories by population. It also has the highest GDP per capita in the world due to its nature as an offshore finance and tax avoidance haven. Even Google used to avoid paying taxes!
However, there’s only one direct route to Bermuda from Europe, and it leaves from London Gatwick Airport. From there, it’s nearly a 7-hour flight that may or may not involve black holes, ghost ships, and aliens of some sort.
And you know what’s great about many of these far off spots? If the airline messes up and ruins your trip via delayed flights, flight cancellations or overbooking (unlikely for Svalbard, I’m sure), they’ll have to pay compensation!
