7 Oscar Movie Filming Locations For 2019
It’s Academy Awards season! This is that magical time of the year when cinema nerds can fight over which movie or actor should get a golden statue of a bald man. And while you’re unlikely to be invited to the events, you can still enjoy some movie magic by visiting filming locations of Oscar-nominated movies!

7. Black Panther – Iguazu Falls, Argentina
The first superhero movie to get such a high nomination/probably the least terrible Marvel movie after Thor Ragnarok, Black Panther did a lot of filming outside Africa. For example, Iguazu Falls in Argentina were the backdrop for T’chala’s battle for the throne.
Of course, parts of the movie happened outside of Wakanda proper. So this is your excuse to visit Busan – or Pusan, as your Korean War veteran uncle would call it. It’s a splendid South Korean metropolis these days, and you don’t even have to chase Andy Serkis to enjoy it.
6. BlacKkKlansman – Ossining, New York
BlacKkKlansman takes place in Colorado Springs in the 1970s. Naturally, that place doesn’t really exist anymore (it’s now a Wendy’s parking spot, all of it). That’s why the “role” of the location was played by Ossining, New York. You might visit it, but you won’t be as fly as John David Washington plays Ron Stallworth!
You should also note that New York is also the filming location for a boatload of other movies, like Can You Ever Forgive Me? If Beale Street Could Talk and A Quiet Place to name but a few. Expect to hear “ey, I’m tryin’ to film a movie ova here” at least once.
5. Bohemian Rhapsody – London, England
Sure enough, the London you saw in Bohemian Rhapsody doesn’t really exist anymore. However, many spots in England were repurposed to play part in it! For example, Bovingdon Airfield (not to be mistaken with Bovington Tank Museum) was made to Wembley Stadium. Many locations around the city player parts of New York, too.
And while you’re in England, you might visit spots that appeared in such a movie as The Favourite. Have a look at Hampton Court Palace or visit the Hatfield House in Hertfordshire.
4. Green Book – Louisiana
Green Book doesn’t partake in the tomfoolery of casting one city as another – or at least in making New York appear everywhere. The movie takes place in Louisiana and shows off Tulane University, the International House and the French Quarter in New Orleans, Aloha Motel in Metairie and Ruby’s Roadhouse in Mandeville.
3. Roma – Mexico City, Mexico
Surprisingly enough, this movie isn’t about the Roma people or historical Rome. Nay, it’s a story of a middle-class family’s maid in the Roma neighborhood of Mexico City. And if middle-class people can afford to hire you as a maid, you sure are in for some dramatic stuff.
Most of the black-and-white movie is shot in the Roma neighborhood, but other locations like Teatro Metropólitan also make an appearance. So why not visit Mexico city?
2. At Eternity’s Gate – Arles, Bouches-du-Rhone and Auvers-sur-Oise, France
Even the IMDB blurb states that At Eternity’s Gate is a movie about Vincent van Gogh’s life at n Arles and Auvers-sur-Oise in France. And now you can experience the movie locations sans Willem Dafoe. Auvers-sur-Oise, where van Gogh is entombed, appeared in the movie, so give the guy a visit, eh?
1. Shoplifters – Tokyo, Japan
Foreign language movies are a small show at the Academy Awards (which is usually all about praising Hollywood blockbusters and nominating Maryl Streep for something). Shoplifter is a movie about a Japanese family of small-time crooks taking in a child.
It was shot in Tokyo and the city is worth a visit. Well, I personally enjoy Kyoto a lot more, but it’s not among the 2019 nominee filming locations, so we have to settle with Tokyo. Make sure to visit Tokyo Teleport, the best-named metro station ever and a life-size statue of a Gundam (giant robot).
But while you’re visiting movie filming locations, you may be stuck with dramatic flight disruptions. While they’re unlikely to ever be made into a movie with Tom Hanks, your flight delays, cancellations or overbooking can still mess up a day (or a week). Fight for your rights and submit a flight compensation claim via Skycop! Up to €600 in compensation might not be the budget of a Marvel movie, but it’s still enough to make something better than what DCU does!
