Travel priorities are shifting in Europe. A report by Accor based on a survey of 8,000 travellers in seven countries shows that 71 % say sustainability matters in their decision of where to go, how to travel, or where to stay. In Italy, 82 % of respondents said having sustainable options is a deciding factor; in Spain it’s 78 %. This includes choices like selecting hotels that follow green practices or using transport that emits less carbon.

Travelling Off-Season to Ease the Strain

Accor’s “European Travel Trends 2024” report also finds that about 32 % of travellers plan to take holidays outside the peak season to reduce costs or avoid crowds. Many are choosing autumn city breaks, winter beach breaks, or spring escapes. This trend spreads visitor numbers more evenly through the year, which is good news for local shops, airports, and airlines that often face disruptions during the busiest months, situations that sometimes lead to Delayed Flight Compensation or Cancelled Flight Compensation claims when schedules are heavily affected.

Sustainable Choices in Accommodation

More travellers are now looking for places to stay that celebrate local culture and care for the environment. According to the same Accor research, 73 % of travellers believe sustainable options are important when booking trips. That means sustainability influences more than just where you stay,  it forms part of the whole travel experience. Choosing guesthouses, eco-lodges, or hotels with green practices helps local communities and naturally reduces impact.

Behaviour Changes and What’s Realistic

The report shows that many travellers plan small but practical changes for their trips: carrying reusable water bottles, being more selective with accommodations, choosing local food, trying to avoid destinations known for overtourism. These adjustments may seem small, but over many trips, they make a difference. Airlines, tour operators, and destination managers also respond – they’re under pressure to offer clearer sustainable alternatives.

When Flights Disrupt the Plan: Know Your Rights

Even when you travel with eco-intentions, disruptions can still happen. If your flight is delayed for more than three hours, cancelled at short notice, or you are denied boarding, you may have the right to claim compensation under EU Regulation 261/2004 – up to €600, depending on the circumstances.

Passengers may also be entitled to Overbooked Flight Compensation, Denied Boarding Compensation, or Missed Connection Compensation under the same regulation, ensuring that every traveller is protected against major flight disruptions within the EU.
