One Thing You Can Visit In Each Region Of Ukraine

Ukraine is big. It’s so big that it’s separated into 24 large regions known as “oblasts.” And all of them have something to offer for the discerning tourist! So here’s the Skycop list of one thing to see in every region of Ukraine!

Sofiyivsky Park, City of Uman, Cherkasy Oblast

Sofiyivsky Park is an arboretum that looks very much like an English garden. 500,000 people a year visit this example of 19th-century gardening designs. Today the park is a popular recreational spot, annually visited by 500,000 visitors.

Architecture, Nizhyn, Chernihiv Oblast

It’s really hard to point out a single thing to see in Nizhyn, as it has seven Baroque churches, one of them dating to the days of Cossacks. And those are just 7 of the 300 ancient buildings in the city, 70 of which are of extreme importance!

The Residence of Bukovinian and Dalmatian Metropolitans, Chernivtsi, Chernivtsi Oblast

Built between the years 1864 – 1882 and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011, this complex was to house the Moldavian Eastern Orthodox bishops. 

The Saviour’s Transfiguration Cathedral, Dnipro, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast

Catherine II of Russia and Austrian Emperor Joseph II laid the foundation stone was in 1787. It was supposed to be one of the spiritual centres of New Russia, but now, it’s the main Orthodox church in Dnipro. 

Sea of Azov coast, Mariupol, Donetsk Oblast

Catch some sunshine on the beaches near Mariupol. The tradition of the resorts stretches back to 1926, probably due to bathing season lasting 120 days and water temperature in summer ranging from 22 to 24 °C (72–75 °F). 

Pysanka Museum, Kolomyia, Ivano-Frankivska Oblast

“Pysanka” is the traditional Ukrainian Easter egg. This is the only museum in the world dedicated to the pysanka! 

The Derzhprom/Gosprom, Kharkiv, Kharkiv Oblast

The “State Industry Building/Palace of Industry” is an amazing example of a constructivist architecture of the 1920s. In scale, it can only be matched by the Dessau Bauhaus and the Van Nelle factory in Rotterdam.

Askania-Nova,  Kherson Oblast

Askania-Nova is a biosphere reserve that contains, among other things, some open territory of virgin steppes. It’s one of the few places where you can see Przewalski’s Horse in its natural habitat! 

Proskurivska street, Khmelnytskyi, Khmelnytskyi Oblast

Proskurivska is a modern pedestrian street, and that makes it especially suited for a relaxed walking tour to marvel at the architecture of buildings that date back to the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th.

Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, Kiev Oblast

You probably know about this place from watching the hit TV series Chernobyl or by playing one of the STALKER games. 

Khutir Nadia, Kropyvnytskyi, Kirovohrad Oblast

This estate belonged to Ivan Karpenko-Karyi, a playwright and theatrical figure of the late 19th – early 20th century. Now, it’s a preserved area of national importance. 

Mstsikhovskiy Manor, Seleznivka, Luhansk Oblast

These ruins are the former palace of the Mtschikovsky of the coal industrialist Kazimir Mtschikhovsky. It was built in the roman-Byzantine style and still looks cool today. 

Svirz Castle, Svirzh, Lviv Oblast

The Świrski noble family built this place as a fortified residence in the 15th century. The castle still has a small church built in 1546.

The Museum of Shipbuilding and Fleet, Mykolaiv, Mykolaiv Oblast

As Mykolaiv is the centre of Ukrainian shipbuilding, it’s only natural that it would feature the only museum dedicated to the subject. See the guns of the Black Sea Fleet and glories recorded on their sides!

Akkerman fortress, Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, Odessa Oblast

Built by the Ottomans, the Akkerman fortress saw numerous renamings. It still remains as a cool spot to visit. 

Krestovozdvizhensky Women’s Monastery, Poltava, Poltava Oblast

This monastery was built in 1650 to celebrate the reclaiming of Poltava from the Poles. 

The Ostroh Castle, Ostroh, Rivne Oblast

Built in the 14th century, it remains as an aesthetically-pleasing ruin in Ostorh.

Mammoth Monument, Kuleshovka, Sumy Oblast

This monument was built in 1841 to commemorate the mammoth bones unearthed there during agricultural work in 1839. 

Zbarazh Castle, Zbarazh Castle, Ternopil Oblast

Zbarazh Castle is a sprawling fortification taking up 16 ha of land – and it’s but one of the 34 castles in Ternopil Oblast.  

Bar Fortress historic site, Vinnytsia Oblast

Not much remains of the Bar Fortress, built in 1537 and redesigned in the 1630s, but the tourists still flock to the site, which includes a park and many nearby structures of religious importance.

Lutsk Castle, Lutsk, Volyn Oblast

Lust Castle is an amazing edifice that began its life as the seat of power for the son of one of the greatest dukes of Grand Duchy of Lithuania. 

Wooden churches, Zakarpattia Oblast

While Ukraine can show you many a solid masonry church building, Zakarpattia is famous for its wooden churches, such as Verkhnye Vodyane or Nyzhnie Selyshche.

Kamyana Mohyla, Terpinnya, Zaporizhia Oblast

The “Stone tomb” is an archaeological site. Unlike most of the stuff on this list, it’s super ancient, and the petroglyphs in it date from Upper Paleolithic to Medieval era. 

The Serhiy Pavlovych Korolyov Museum of Cosmonautics, Zhytomyr, Zhytomyr Oblast

And now for a touch of something super modern. This space museum is dedicated to Serhiy Korolyov, the guy who led the Sputnik project. You can see a lot of space relics in there, like a lunar rover and a lunar soil sample.
