Did you experience denied boarding due to overbooking?

Overbooking is a common airline practice these days. The airlines oversell flight tickets to maximize their profits: that’s how they can fill the free seats of the passengers who did not show up for the flight. It’s very unpleasant when your travel plans are disrupted due to the carrier’s fault. In this case, any passenger who faced denied boarding because of overbooked flight is entitled to a compensation!

If you experienced denied boarding due to an overbooked flight – don’t worry! You can get up to €600 per person!

What to do if the flight was overbooked

  1. Unfortunately it is not enough to know that your flight is overbooked. You should still come to the airport and register your flight. After denied boarding due to overbooking, the carrier must provide you with information on other ways you can reach your destination.
  2. If you want to get a compensation, you need to have written evidence of denied boarding. It should be written on your new boarding card or luggage receipt. If you don’t have it – please contact the carrier personnel.
  1. If your flight was overbooked, your carrier must provide you with free meals and drinks. You should also be allowed to make two free calls, use e-mail or send a free fax. If you have to wait for the flight for one or more nights, the carrier must grant you free accommodation at a hotel, including transport to/from the airport.
  2. If your friends or family members were to be on same flight with you, remember that each passenger is eligible to get a compensation.
  3. If you went on a business trip and your ticket was bought by the company – don’t worry. Compensation for cancelled flight belongs to the person whose name is on the ticket.

Skycop operates under European Commission regulations

When you travel by plane, you are protected by the European regulation (EC) 261/2004. Only a small percentage of all air passengers are aware of their rights and many lack the legal knowledge to claim compensation for their delayed flights. Even when they know they can get a compensation, that’s not that easy do when one needs to convince the airlines!

What compensation are you entitled to?

€ 250

If you reached your destination more than 3 hours late and travel distance was up to 1,500 km

€ 400

If the distance was between 1 500 km and 3 500 km and you reached your destination more than 3 hours late.

€ 600

If the travel distance was over 3 500 km and you reached your destination more than 3 hours late.

If you choose to travel on a different route, and you have to wait, your carrier must provide you with free meals and drinks. You should also be allowed to make two free calls, use e-mail or send a free fax. If you have to wait for the flight for one or more nights, the carrier must grant you free accommodation at a hotel, including transport to/from the airport.

Check if EU air passenger rights apply in your case

  1. If your flight is within the EU and is operated either by an EU or a non-EU airline
  2. If your flight arrives in the EU from outside the EU and is operated by an EU airline
  3. If your flight departs from the EU to a non-EU country operated by an EU or a non-EU airline

EU means the 28 EU countries, including Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, Réunion Island, Mayotte, Saint-Martin (French Antilles), the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands as well as Iceland, Norway and Switzerland.

“Die Fluggesellschaften waren zwar echt kreativ beim Finden von Gründen,
warum ich keine Flugentschädigung erhalten sollte. Aber der hohe Wissensstand und die
Hartnäckigkeit von Skycop haben sich ausgezahlt: Mit nur einigen E-Mails war die Sache
erledigt und ich habe meine Entschädigung erhalten. Tausend Dank.”
