Flight routes involving London, Barcelona, Brussels, and Milan are getting cancelled as the struggling airline faces airplane repossession.
WOW Air was experiencing financial issues already, but with Icelandair out of the negotiations to help, the airline is at its worst yet. Passengers on a cancelled flight from Reykjavik to London had to spent a night on the airport floor and various other routes are getting axed. An Airbus A321-200 was already repossessed in Montreal.
As always, air passengers suffering from these cancelled flights should know that they have rights granted to them under Regulation (EC) 261/2004 – even if WOW Air didn’t do much to help those stuck in Keflavik. The airline has to provide you with free meals and drinks. You should also be allowed to make two free calls, use email or send a free fax. If you have to wait for the flight for one or more nights, the carrier has to provide you with free accommodation at a hotel, including transport to/from the airport. In case they’re unable/unwilling to do this, save the receipts: all “rational” expenses (no VIP penthouses, caviar or limos) should be refunded afterwards. Read more here.

However, since WOW Air might be facing bankruptcy soon, the chances of actually being able to get a compensation is slim. Regulation (EC) 261/2004 lists airline bankruptcy as one of the exceptions. So if the airline hasn’t paid you by that time, your claim is likely to be forfeit. Keep that in mind when claiming compensation – or when thinking about travelling with WOW Air
