Thousands of air travelers will face delayed flights during the May Bank holiday. Security staff, firefighters, baggage handlers, and airport assistance staff are planning to undertake strike actions from 26th to 30th of May.
Last week Unite union representing Luton Airport workers announced about strike actions because of the dispute of over pay and zero-hour contracts. The strike action of Luton Airport employees was postponed after they have received an enhanced pay offer from their management.
Despite the fact that Luton airport employees have postponed their strike, baggage handlers employed by Menzies aviation plan to strike on the 26th of May until the next day midday, although the employees are also considering a revised offer. Unite’s members (employed by Clece Care Service Ltd), who works at the airport with passengers with reduced mobility, are also taking action from 28th to 30th of May.
Unfortunately, air passengers will not be compensated for these flight delays. According to EC 261/2004 Regulation strikes are still considered as “extraordinary circumstances”.
“A number of strikes is increasing every year. Unfortunately, but passengers usually have their flights delayed or even canceled because of these. But even during this kind of flight disruptions passengers have their rights. Carriers need to take care of their customers according to the EC 261/2004 regulation,” comments Marius Stonkus, the CEO of flight compensation company Skycop.
