Israeli Airspace Closure
Israel closed its airspace on Saturday evening after Iran launched a direct assault on the country. This led to the suspension of flights to and from Tel Aviv and neighbouring countries like Jordan, Iraq, and Lebanon. Germany’s Lufthansa Group also announced the suspension of flights to Tel Aviv, Erbil, and Amman until Tuesday.
Why did airlines decide to stop operating or reroute flights temporarily?
When flying from Europe to India or Southeast Asia, airlines frequently pass throughIran’s airspace. Airspaces in the region are complicated and fraught with risk because of continuing hostilities. During the escalation of Israel’s conflict with Hamas in Gaza, airlines were forced to cancel or reschedule flights to and from Tel Aviv in order to ensure passenger safety. Since October 7, that situation has been under constant surveillance.
However, Israel was compelled to completely close its airspace on Saturday for both internal and foreign flights, restoring it early on Sunday. Iran launched its strike in response to an alleged Israeli attack on the country’s embassy in Syria on April 1 that resulted in the death of a senior military officer. Iran appeared to be retaliating against Israel on Saturday night (April 13) by firing missiles and launching explosive drones, which has increased the possibility of a larger regional battle.
Effects on Airlines
Several airlines have had to adjust their flight schedules and reroute planes to avoid Iranian airspace:
- EasyJet has ceased flights to and from Tel Aviv as of Sunday, April 21. You can get acquainted with EasyJet compensation in case of need.
- On Tuesday, April 16, Wizz Air announced it would start operating flights to Israel again after ceasing operations in Tel Aviv on Sunday and Monday. Check out the Wizz Air claim form as an official way to request compensation for inconveniences.
- Lufthansa announced that travel to Tehran and Beirut would only be possible at least until April 18.
- All KLM flights to and from Tel Aviv have been cancelled until Tuesday.
- On Sunday and Monday, Iberia Express cancelled its flights to Tel Aviv.
- Qantas, for example, is changing course to avoid flying over Iran.
- Virgin Atlantic has stopped flights to Iraq, Iran, or Israel.
Passengers affected by the disruptions are being offered compensation for cancelled flight, rebooking, or refund options by the airlines. Recent events in the Middle East have undoubtedly had a significant impact on air travel to and from the region. Passengers are advised to check with their airlines for the latest updates on flight schedules and safety precautions. Travellers and airlines need to prioritise safety and security in geopolitical uncertainty.
